Laguna Beach and its surrounding coastal areas are part of what is called the Mediterranean biome, characterized by mild winters, hot dry summers, and moisture-laden oceanic breezes. This particular biome, or community of flora and fauna, is quite rare: it occurs in only five places on the planet.

These include the majestic California grizzly bear (which is now extinct), and the Laguna Liveforever, a rare and endangered plant that is endemic to this area.
